Petrov’s Formula 1 days numbered

15.07.2010 - News

The future of Russia's first ever F1 driver, Vitaly Petrov, seems uncertain after a recent statement from Renault team chief Eric Boullier.

In his interview with the Swiss paper Le Matin, Boullier said he doesn’t exclude the possibility of Petrov being replaced by Toro Rosso man Sebastien Buemi in the 2011 season.

"Sebastian is on the list of potential Renault F1 drivers in 2011. And on this list, he has a special place, because I have long known him and have a very warm attitude towards him," the Frenchman said.

Renault recently extended the contract with their No. 1 – Pole Robert Kubica – until 2012, so it seem that Petrov would be the one the 21-year-old Swiss talent would replace.

25-year-old Vitaly Petrov is the first Russian ever to appear behind the wheel of a Formula 1 vehicle.

The driver, nicknamed the “Vyborg Rocket,” made his debut in the first race of 2010, scoring points just once at the Chinese GP in April, overtaking Michael Schumacher and Mark Webber in spectacular style on the final laps.

He currently sits 15th in the drivers championship, with six points after half the season, while Buemi is one place higher and one point ahead.
