The Russian Football Association is investigating
a referee's claims that he was threatened by a politician during a
premier league match. Aleksandr Gvardis officiated Terek's surprise 1:0
win over CSKA Moscow and turned down penalty appeals by the homeside in
the first half.
The Russian domestic season may be drawing to an
end, but Russia's top hockey players are busy preparing for the
upcoming World Championships in Canada in May. Vyacheslav Bykov's side
held a final training session just outside Moscow, before flying off to
play friendlies against Austria and Italy.
Russia's build up to Euro 2008 begins in earnest
later as they face Romania in Bucharest in a friendly. It’s their first
match since qualifying and comes just days after Guus Hiddink committed
to Russia for the long-term.

Russia’s hockey chiefs are establishing a

Good point guards have been hard to come by in
Russia. The men's national team solved the problem by providing CSKA
playmaker JR Holden with Russian citizenship. The women have followed
suit and one of the most prolific U.S. point guards Becky Hammon now
also has a Russian passport in addition to her U.S. one.
The start of the Russian football season has
again focused attention on the profitability of many clubs. Low ticket
prices, old stadiums and sometimes outrageous player contracts mean a
financial struggle for many clubs.
Russia’s first ever state-of-the-art sledge and
bobsleigh track has been unveiled in the Moscow suburbs. At the opening
ceremony, President-elect Dmitry Medvedev said the facility symbolized
a resurgent Russia.
