After 16 days of tough competition, Russia's
athletes are homeward bound after finishing in third place in the
rankings. There were triumphs and disappointments, which will now enter
the history books. But it was certainly the hosts of the games, China,
which have most reason to celebrate. They won fifty-one golds with an
overall tally of 100 medals and claimed first place in the rankings.
They came to enjoy the spectacle and support
their national teams. But visiting heads of state at the Beijing games
now find themselves discussing the developing crisis in Georgia.
Five Russian athletes have been banned from
competing in Beijing after they were found to have tampered with doping
tests. Yelena Soboleva, the world indoor 1500 metre record holder, and
four other sportswomen were suspended following a year-long
investigation.
Russia's Prime Minister, Vladimir Putin, will
lead the team of Russian fans at the opening of the 2008 Olympics in
Beijing. The news was confirmed by the Russian Foreign Minister, Sergey
Lavrov, during his stay in China.
