Want a bike taxi? Just call

Since the global economic crisis began, even Lexus and Infinity owners have descended to making some money as gypsy cab drivers, but as for proud bikers? Well, it appears the economic turmoil made them lose ground too. A bike taxi has its advantages. A motorcycle’s gasoline consumption is considerably less than that of a car – so the trip costs cheaper. Journey time is also a factor, but the curse of big cities – traffic jams – are no problem for motorbikes, Komsomolskaya Pravda daily says. In the Russian city of Voronezh in the southwest of Russia there are ten bike taxis already. The bikers’ leader Aleksandr Shcherbinin says they are also ready to render courier services, as well as sightseeing trips around the city at night, or become part of a wedding motorcade. “The only thing is that we won’t drive with a child or a drunk person. This is very dangerous for both the biker and the passenger,” Shcherbinin says. In addition, the biker-cabbies always have a helmet for the passenger and assist them in putting it on. Moreover, in order not to embarrass the passengers, their bikes have handles to hold on, thus avoiding the delicate matter of wrapping one’s arms around the biker’s waist. There are drawbacks too – one has to call to order a bike taxi, as it is impossible to just flag down a motorcycle in the street, and there’s place for only one person behind the biker’s back – but when you’re in a bike taxi, who actually cares about the drawbacks?
