The most common printing medium is plastic filament. The filament is feed into the extruder of a printer which brings heats and melts the plastic. Then the liquid plastic is later released via a tiny opening in the extruder head to make the model. The plastic solidifies very quickly as soon as it is released from the extruder.
The G code controls the movement of the extruder head as soon as the plastic is released. It merely tells the printer to move the extruder in three axes as the model is being printed- left to right as X-axis, front to back that is Z axis and up and down that is Y-axis. Then the plastic is laid down in layers; this printing process is often known as additive manufacturing.
